Of course I will. I like to make the most of my days and bust maximum tournaments.
I walk to the cage and register for the 5K mixed. Then I go to the satellite area and play the first tournament I can get, a $300 single table satellite.
At 25/25 I open 9c-8c in MP2 to 75. The button and BB both call.
Flop: 9-7-6 rainbow
BB checks, I bet 200, button folds, BB check-raises to 650, I shove my 2,000, and he calls with T7o.
Turn: 8
River: 4
Shit, first guy out just five minutes in, and now there’s a big line for the satellites.
I wander around the Rio and kill some time being social. It’s odd that there are two hold ‘em events in one day (I don’t recall it happening once last year), but considering I’ve busted in one, it at least gives me something to do.
At a little before 5PM I settle into my seat and am pleased to find a mostly older looking table without any well known Internet players. This field should be one of the toughest of the series, and I’ve lucked out to get a softer table draw. We start with 10,000 chips at 50/100 Limit. It’s been a while since I’ve played serious Limit, but having played so much, I feel quite competent. My first hand comes up in Limit:
Stacks: 10K. 100/200 Limit. I hold As-Kd on the button.
Pre-flop: 1 fold, UTG+1 raises, folds to me on the button, I re-raise to 300, the blinds fold, UTG makes it 400, I call.
Flop: Jh-7d-3h
UTG bets 100, I call.
Turn: 8c
UTG bets 200, I fold.
I fold for a round then find myself in a spot vs. well-known live player Layne Flack:
Stacks: ~10K. I hold A-A on the CO.
Pre-flop: Folds to Layne on the HJ, HJ raises to 200, I re-raise to 300, button folds, blinds fold, Layne calls.
Flop: 6-7-9 rainbow
HJ checks, I bet 100, HJ calls.
Turn: 5
HJ checks, I bet 200, HJ calls.
River: A
HJ checks, I bet 200, HJ calls and mucks when he sees my A-A.
The rounds are a half-hour split of Limit and No-Limit. I’m very card dead for the 25/50 blind level of No-Limit and nothing of interest happens. The same goes for the 100/200 Limit level and 50/100 No-Limit level, though I play a couple small pots where I raise pre-flop and check fold after getting a few callers in NL. My stack slips slightly, and mostly I just watch the table and try and figure the players out. I don’t find another interesting spot until 200/400 Limit:
My stack: ~8,500. UTG: ~20,000. 200/400 Limit. I hold A-Ko in the BB. UTG is CardPlayer owner and fairly tight player Barry Shulman.
Pre-flop: UTG raises to 400, folds to me in the BB, I re-raise to 600, UTG calls.
Flop: 6-7-8 rainbow
I bet 200, UTG calls.
Turn: 9
I check, UTG bets 400, I fold.
I’m inactive for the rest of the Limit level and lose a small pot in NL where I raise pre-flop, continuation bet, and fold to a raise. The next hand of interest again comes up against Barry Shulman:
My stack: ~6,000. Shulman: ~24,000. Blinds 75/150 in NL. I hold Jc-9c on the CO.
Pre-flop: Folds to me on the CO, I raise to 400, Shulman calls on the button, both blinds fold.
Flop: 5h-5d-8h
I bet 600, Shulman calls.
Turn: Ad
I bet 1,200, Shulman calls.
River: Ah
I check, Shulman shoves. I fold.
This is not going well at all. I am extremely card dead during the next Limit level, the 100/200 NL level, and the Limit level after. The blinds are doing huge damage to my stack and, in Limit, there is almost always an open in front of me. The next time we get back to NL I find myself against Shulman again:
My stack: ~3,000. Shulman: ~26,000. I hold 8-7o in the SB. Blinds 100/200 with a 25 ante.
Pre-flop: Folds to me in the SB, I complete, BB checks.
Flop: K-K-Q rainbow
I bet 250, BB calls.
Turn: 4
I bet 550. Wow, I cannot even begin to explain how awful that bet is. Shulman is basically never floating me on this flop, won’t fold J-T, and is raising almost every A pre-flop. This bet is totally pointless and a complete waste of chips. God, I’m retarded. Shulman of course calls.
River: 6
I check, BB checks behind and tables Qs-Ts. I muck.
I steal the blinds with shoves a couple times and get my stack back to 3,000. Then, a mid-30s looking player who has been moderately active shoves the CO for 1,125 when I’m in the BB for 200 with J-To. There’s 225 out in antes, 300 in blinds, and his 200 to match the blind, so 925 to win 1,650. I think this is a call? Plus everyone in No-Limit is opening 4x and having a few more chips will give me a chance to re-steal, so I elect to call. He tables Qs-Js and the board runs out Q high, so I’m knocked to around 2,000.
When we switch to a massive 800/1,600 limit I have to go all-in (I have 50 left) UTG+1 after looking down at the Ks. It folds to the BB who puts in my last 50 chips and tables Q-To. I smash over my hidden card face up and it’s the As. I flop the K and manage to double up.
I have to pay the blinds after that and am knocked right back down. It’s a round later before I get a chance to put my short stack all-in again:
My stack: 2,450. UTG: 1,650. I hold Ah-7h in MP1.
Pre-flop: UTG raises to 1,600, folds to me, I three bet to 2,400, it folds to the CO who cold four bets to 3,200, the blinds fold, UTG calls all-in, I call all-in.
UTG flips up J-To, I show my Ah-7h and the CO tables 8s-5s. Um…what?
Flop: Js-9s-7c
Turn: 4s
River: X
I tap the table and wish everyone luck. I am most perplexed by the 8s-5s, but the J-To would have won anyway.
Watts and I take a cab back to the house and yet again he loses the flip for the cab fare. I have an enormous amount of trouble sleeping at night and don’t doze off until 6AM. The alarm is set for 10:40AM.
